Convert Excel Documents into Diagrams!

I got something super exciting to share!

I worked with a super smart developer, Roman S, to make a tool to convert Excel files detailing connectivity information into diagrams! Yes, that’s right – convert your Excel files into network diagrams! Roman did all the intelligent work – I just provided the ideas, made minor modifications, and added a handful of minor features to the brilliant Python script he created.

It converts input like the above Excel connectivity information into a nice diagram in SVG format, like the one below. You can convert the above Excel file using just one command from the Excel-to-Network-Diagram-Converter (E2NDConverter.py) script in less than a minute! SVG format can be natively imported into Visio for further manipulation.

I will follow up with a video – as there are many more features in this tool that are SUPER useful. Enjoy!

  1. Great work.
I think it will be greater if it is possible to export to GraphML format which can be opened by yED.
yED is a free desktop application to quickly create, import, edit, and automatically arrange diagrams. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Unix/Linux. https://www.yworks.com/products/yed
I have been using yED for a while, and I think it is better for network enginner who working with diagram than Visio. Not just for drawing but for its ability to integrate with data.

    1. Very cool, thank you. A quick Google search showed me that it’s possible to convert the dot format, which my script outputs, to GraphML format using Graphviz utility called gv2gml. It’s also possible to import dot output directly into yED live already. I’ll see if I can also incorporate this output. Awesome idea! Thank you for sharing 🙂
